Course of Advanced Studies on Geopolitics (IDN-UAL)
Open applications

This course will take place between November 7, 2018 and April 24, 2019. It is a partnership between the Autónoma University of Lisbon (UAL) and the National Defense Institute (IDN) and aims to:

- provide information and reflection on the conceptual, theoretical and methodological framework of Geopolitics, from classical thinking to new approaches, and also including cartographic representation or the construction of scenarios and prospects;

- promote in-depth analysis of current geopolitical dynamics and interactions, particularly in global space and in certain regional areas (North, Central and South America, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia-Pacific, Post-Soviet Space , Europe, Portugal);

- to develop an attitude of critical reflection on the central and diversified themes of the contemporary world in the perspective of geopolitics (Demography and Migration, Environment and Climate Change, Energy Resources, New Chinese Silk Road, Proliferation and Nuclear Counter proliferation in the case of Syria).

On June 18, at the National Defense Institute, the presentation of the book by Dr. João Paulo Alsina "Essays on the Great Brazilian Strategy" was held, followed by a round-table discussion. Dr. João Paulo Alsina presented the book. The invited commentators were Professor Dr. Carlos Gaspar and the Colonel (Doctor) Nuno Lemos Pires. Following the commentators' speeches, a roundtable discussion period open to all guests was held.

Launching session of the book "Brazil and the Challenges of the International System" (No. 39 of the ATENA Collection)

On June 14, at the National Defense Institute, the publication of the Athena collection entitled "Brazil and the Challenges of the International System" was launched. The presentation of the book was made by Professor Doctor Andrés Malamud, author of the Preface and, on the part of the authors, Professor Carmen Fonseca and Professor Pedro Seabra spoke about their work.

IDN Papers No. 28
30 april 2018

IDN Papers 28, entitled "Contributions to a National Strategy for Cyberdefence" was edited, a corollary of a research project developed by IDN as a result of a request from His Excellency the Minister of National Defense, Professor José Alberto Azeredo Lopes, and benefited from the contribution of a group of experts with a professional and academic background that stands out in cybersecurity and cyber-defense. It is, in fact, a very valuable and qualified contribution to the essential definition of a National Strategy for Cyber-defense.

Seminar "2035 - Four Scenarios for the European Union in a Turbulent World"
24 april 2018

On 24 April, a seminar on the theme "2035 - Four Scenarios for the European Union in a Turbulent World" took place at the Institute of National Defense.

In a globalized, highly technological and unpredictable world, subject to multiple risks and threats, the development of skills associated with anticipating and creating scenarios becomes relevant.

In the first part of the seminar was presented a methodology to support the prospective and scenarios building.

In the second part, four scenarios were discussed, based on the crucial uncertainties identified in a macro-framework perspective and in the context of the European Union, as well as their impact on Portugal.

On 17 April, the International Seminar “European Defence” was held to discuss the state of implementation of European defense policies, measures and action plans, following the European Council in 2016, when a number of initiatives in the framework of the Common Security and Defense Policy were agreed by the 27 members or even proposed by one or more member states to encourage strategic partnerships, promote capacity building, foster European research, technology and defense industry.

International Congress on World War I. Centenary of the Battle of La Lys
09 april 2018

The International Congress of the First World War. Centennial of the Battle of La Lys, which took place in the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of Fernando Pessoa University, Porto on April 9, 10 and 11, was hold in partnership with the National Defense Institute.

This Congress intended to mark the centenary of the participation of Portuguese Forces in the First World War. The meeting aimed to promote a critical reflection on the conditions of development of the First World conflict, calling for a multidisciplinary response on the History of Europe, Diplomatic and Military History, Political Science, International Relations and Communication Sciences, as well as a multidimensional vision about the motivations and implications of the conflict - political, strategic, ideological, operational, tactical, demographic, economic and human – both national and international.

27 february 2018

The National Defense Institute held the international seminar "The End of the First World War: Consequences for the Portuguese Foreign and Defense Policies" on February 27, 2018, between 09:30 and 17:45. Professor Michael Neiberg, United States Army War College, gave the opening conference of the seminar. The seminar will also featured the lectures of Professor António José Telo, Military Academy, and Professor Fernando Rosas, Institute of Contemporary History of the Nova University of Lisbon. Two panels completed the seminar program, in which lecturers Jose Antonio Sanchez Roman, Complutense University of Madrid, Teresa Nunes, Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, Pedro Aires Oliveira, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Lisbon , Bruno Reis, ISCTE-IUL and IDN, and António Paulo Duarte, IDN.

IV International Seminar on Transatlantic Security

The IV International Seminar on Transatlantic Security, a partnership between the National Defense Institute, the Portuguese Institute of International Relations of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the Luso-American Foundation for Development , was held on January 30th at the National Defense Institute.

The objective of the Seminar was to deepen reflection and debate on the current transatlantic security context. Keynote Speaker was Ambassador José Cutileiro, former Secretary General of the Western European Union. The seminar also included two panels: a first on the United States and the International Order, which had as lecturers Prof. Tarun Chhabra, The Brookings Institution, Prof. Carlos Gaspar, IDN & IPRI-NOVA and Prof. Doctor Vasco Rato, FLAD; a second on NATO the EU and the European Defense, which will have as lecturers Prof. Ian Lesser, The German Marshall Fund of the United States and Prof.  Isabel Ferreira Nunes, IDN.

International Seminar on “International regimes in a globalized world”

On the 29th of November 2016, the National Defense Institute has organized an international seminar on “International regimes in a globalized world” with the purpose of assessing the convergent consequences and the transformative and stabilizing effects of international regimes. The event has reflected on the concept of international regimes and its current analytical and policy value and will examine three regimes, notably the impact of transnational threats on security regimes, on good governance, and the consequences of crises and conflicts on global mobility regimes. The seminar has counted with the expertise of prominent European academics on regime theory and scholars with specific expertise on governance, security and mobility regimes.

Education Framework on Security, Defense and Peace

The IDN, in close collaboration with the Direção-Geral da Educação (DGE) of the Education Ministry, as developed the “Education Framework on Security, Defense and Peace” (Referencial de Educação para a Segurança, a Defesa e a Paz). This education framework and other guiding documents constitute general guidelines on the multiple dimensions of citizenship aimed to educate and sensitize students in the education curriculum framework for Citizenship in Preschool and Primary and Secondary School to issues related to security, defense and peace.

Report on the International Seminar ‘The European Union Global Strategy’
10 march 2016

In June 2016 the European Council will take place and central issues on the international role of the European Union and the future of its foreign and european security policies will be discussed. On February 1, an international seminar on 'The European Global Strategy' was held at the National Defence Institute, focusing on the role of Europe in the world, on the current state of the european strategic partnerships, on the challenges to its foreign and security policies, on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and North Africa and on the future of Common Security and Defence Policy. This seminar counted on the expertise of advisers to the office of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and national and foreign experts from the best european think tanks.

"The terrorist threat and European security"

On the 29th of February, from 14:30, the National Defence Institute has conducted a seminar on "The terrorist threat and European security."

This seminar aimed to promote an open and plural debate on what is today perceived to be one of the greatest threats to European security. Keynote speakers were:Ambassador Jean-François Blarel, French Ambassador to Portugal, and Professor Fernando Reinares, Director of the Program on Global Terrorism from the Royal Elcano Institute,who has addressed the theme 'The Paris attacks and the evolution of the terrorist threat to Europe'.

The seminar also included two panels: the first on the terrorist threat in Western Europe, which has had as speakers Dr. Bernardo Pires de Lima, IPRI-NOVA, and Colonel Duarte Costa, Chief of Staff of the Army Operational Comand ; the second, on the war in Syria, with speakers Professor Ana Santos Pinto, IPRI-NOVA and IDN, and Professor Bruno Cardoso Reis, ICS and IDN.

The Institute of National Defence, in partnership with the Portuguese Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon, has organised on 19 October a Seminar entitled "The EU and the Refugee Crisis". The Seminar’s objective was to promote an open and plural debate on what is considered to be one of the major challenges facing the European Union today. The Seminar started with an opening conference, followed by two panels that addressed the refugee crisis and the civil wars in Syria, Iraq and Libya.

Second edition of the International Seminar on Transatlantic Security

The National Defence Institute (IDN), in partnership with the Portuguese Institute of International Relations of the New University of Lisbon (IPRI-UNL) and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), has organized on 23 June 2015 the second edition of the International Seminar on Transatlantic Security, held at IDN's Auditorium 1 in Lisbon, and at IDN Porto through video teleconference.

The Seminar’s aim was to promote an intellectual, political and public debate on the security issues affecting the transatlantic relations. It was organized in four panels that addressed the crisis in Ukraine, the war in Syria and Iraq, NATO-EU relations and the security dynamics in the South Atlantic.
