​​​​​This course was created within the framework of the protocol established between the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH) and the National Defence Institute - IDN.

Under the Protocol signed between the two institutions, the completion of this Post Graduation allows the student, if he/she wishes to continue his/her studies, to request the accreditation, in accordance with Regulation No. 370/2015, of the skills acquired, up to a maximum of 40 ECTS of the curricular part of the Master's Degree in Political Science and International Relations of NOVA FCSH, and the interested parties, who wish to undertake the Master's Degree, must respect the valid application criteria for other candidates.

The Post Graduation in Strategic and Security Studies aims to foster scientific knowledge and provide the analysis tools and methodologies needed to assess, manage and make decisions. It includes concrete problems arising from the challenges posed by the new international security and defence framework, international cooperation, globalisation, the geopolitical and geostrategic context in which global power relations are shaped, in which strategic decision-making processes and the national security and defence framework need to be addressed.


  • Provide a high degree of theoretical and applied preparation, contributing to the qualification of candidates in the exercise of leadership or technical advisory roles, in public structures of the State, in companies, in private organizations and in the framework of civil society in the current context of global relationships, as well as in governmental, non-governmental, intergovernmental and international organizations.
  • Consolidate knowledge in a theoretical, practical and interdisciplinary framework on major national and international issues arising from challenges and opportunities in a context of global security, enabling participants to understand better and debate the framework of changes in the contemporary world;
  • Provide participants with a set of knowledge and analysis methodologies, which allow a rigorous understanding of global, regional and national issues in the area of ​​Security and Defence from a multidimensional and multidisciplinary perspective.
  • Develop skills to apply knowledge to formulate, solve and solve problems in diverse thematic contexts and complex situations, which involve decision-making in security and defence.​

1st semester – September to December

  • Globalization and Security (Teresa Rodrigues) - Friday, 18:00 - 20:00 (21:00)
  • Strategic Decision Process (Nuno Lemos Pires and Luís Barroso) - Friday, 21:00-23:00.

2nd semester – February to May

  • Geopolitics and Geostrategy (Arnaut Moreira) - Tuesday - from 18:00 to 20:00.
  • National Security and Defense (António Paulo Duarte) - Thursday, from 18:00 to 20:00.

2nd semester - 3 optional UCs

  • Portuguese foreign policy (Severiano Teixeira) - Wednesday - 18:00-21:00.
  • Security and Strategy Studies (António Horta Fernandes) - Friday - 18:00 - 21:00
  • Migrations and Political Identity (Ana Santos Pinto) - Friday - 18:00 - 21:00​​

  • Candidates holding a degree completion certificate obtained at a Higher Education Institution in countries that subscribe to the Bologna Declaration and others considered similar, taking into account the respective curricular structure with mention of the final average;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the degree by the statutorily competent scientific body of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, with mention of the final average;
  • Holders of an academic or scientific curriculum are recognized by the Selection Jury, which attests to the ability to carry out this cycle of studies.
