November 3-6, 2025

Between November 3-6, 2025, the Advanced Diplomacy for Peace, Security and Defence Course was held at the facilities of the National Defence Institute (IDN) in Lisbon, organized by the IDN in partnership with the European Security and Defence College (ESDC).

The course program included a wide range of essential topics for contemporary diplomacy, including great powers' diplomacy, the evolution of multilateral diplomacy, transatlantic defence and security, space diplomacy, ocean governance, climate diplomacy, cyber and information, among other strategic areas.

The sessions were led by a diverse panel of European experts, academics, diplomats, and policymakers.

Twenty-nine participants completed the course, coming from various Member States of the European Union and other countries, representing a wide institutional diversity: Armed Forces, Ministries and national public entities, diplomats at different stages of their careers, academics and professionals from the private sector. This heterogeneity allowed for an intense exchange of experiences, enriching the debate throughout the week.

All the pedagogical objectives were fully achieved, with participants expressing a high level of satisfaction in the final surveys, describing the training as "an excellent course," both for the content and topicality of the themes, and for the quality of the invited speakers.

The program also included a fellowship dinner at the Naval Military Club, an event that strengthened professional networking among the participants and also among the organizers of this training activity.

The course was concluded with the traditional certificate award ceremony, presided by the Deputy Minister for Defence Policy, Nuno Pinheiro Torres, emphasizing the national commitment to the development of strategic knowledge, European cooperation, and diplomacy for peace and security.
