“Perspectives on Security and Defence in the European Context" is the result of a study project proposed during the Portuguese presidency of the Network of European Strategic Studies Institutes (NESSI), in 2022, and is based on a survey conducted by six European countries – Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Romania -, focusing on the outcomes and consequences of the adoption of the EU's Strategic Compass and the new NATO Strategic Concept on strategic formulation at the national level.
The publication features contributions from researchers from the following strategic studies institutes: National Defence Academy, Centre for Security and Military Strategic Studies (CSMSS), Istituto di Analisi e Ricerca della Difesa (IRAD), The Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM), Instituto da Defesa Nacional, and Institute for Political Studies of Defense and Military History (IPSDMH).
The security and defence challenges perceived by the nations which participated in this study, and which are described in the various chapters of the report differ in terms of nature of the main threats, threat assessments and preferred strategic partners. Despite the differences in these security and defence challenges, what unites the six countries examined appears to be more significant than what separates them.
