​​​​Nação e Defesa is a peer-reviewed and open-access journal that promotes a multidisciplinary approach to academic publishing in the areas of political science and international relations, security and strategic studies, history, diplomatic studies, sociology, and public international law. It accepts submissions in Portuguese and English.​

The manuscript submitted for publication, in English, must be sent by email to idn.publicacoes@defesa.pt​, observing the following rules:
  • Length between 5,000 and 8,000 words (spaces included) in Word format;
  • Abstract (up to 150 words);
  • Title and keywords;
  • Adoption of the Harvard reference system;
  • Filling out the Identification Form available in author_form.pdf
  • Submitted texts must be unpublished;​ 

The manuscript will be evaluated anonymously (blind peer review). Nação e Defesa treats the submitted manuscript and all communication with authors and referees as confidential.

Nação e Defesa adopts the Harvard bibliographic reference system - https://library.aru.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm​. This system uses the author and date in the text body and a list of references at the end of the text, organized in alphabetical order. The reference list contains a detailed list of cited books, journals, and electronic sources.

The views and opinions expressed in the text belong solely to the authors. Authors take responsibility and are accountable for what is published.

Each author will receive one copy of the journal.

By submitting a manuscript to the journal, the author (s) declare that they allow the digitization, upload, and dissemination of the article on IDN digital content platforms, repositories, and bibliographic databases. Questions not addressed here can be directed to the Editor.

We reserve the right to reject a paper even after it has been accepted if it becomes apparent that there are serious problems with its scientific content, or our publishing policies have been violated.

The journal Nação e Defesa is a specialized periodic which aim to contribute for the leading knowledge in the fields of Security and Defence studies. At Nação e Defesa, we hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards when it comes to publishing. Our editorial board takes great care to prevent any malpractice and ensure that all articles are original and free of plagiarism. We expect all authors to affirm the originality of their manuscript and confirm that it has not been published  nor under review elsewhere. Our duties for editors, authors, and reviewers are based on the guidelines provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which can be found at http://publicationethics.org/.

Duties of Editor

1. Editorial Decisions: Upon review by the editorial board, the editor will accept, reject, or request modifications to the manuscript.

2. Manuscript Review: The editor will assess the originality of each manuscript using appropriate software. Once approved, the manuscript will be sent for double-blind peer review by two reviewers who will recommend acceptance, rejection, or modification. The review process will take up to 30 days.

3. Impartiality: The editor must ensure that every manuscript submitted to the Journal is evaluated solely for its intellectual content, without bias based on the authors' sex, gender, race, religion, citizenship, or any other factor.

4. Confidentiality: The editor is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all information related to submitted manuscripts.

5. Disclosure and Conflict of Interest: The Journal's editor will not use any unpublished material from a submitted manuscript in their own research without the author's written consent.

Duties of Authors

1. Reporting Standards: To ensure the accuracy and objectivity of their research, authors should provide an honest account of their work and its significance. Manuscripts should adhere to the submission guidelines of the journal.

2. Originality: Authors must make sure that their work is entirely original.

3. Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publications: To avoid redundancy, authors should not submit the same manuscript to multiple journals at once, nor should they publish similar research in more than one journal.

4. Acknowledgement of Sources: To give credit where it's due, authors should acknowledge all the sources of data they used and cite any influential publications.

5. Authorship of the Paper: Only those who made a significant contribution to the research (in terms of conception, design, execution, or interpretation) should be listed as authors. Other contributors should be listed as co-authors. All authors should agree to the submitted version of the manuscript.

6. Data Access and Retention: Authors should provide the raw data related to their manuscript for editorial review and retain that data.

7. Disclosure of Financial Support: Authors must disclose any sources of financial support they received.

8. Fundamental Errors in Published Works: If authors discover any significant errors or inaccuracies in their published work, they should report them to the editor.

Duties of Reviewers

1.  Confidentiality: Information regarding manuscripts submitted by authors should be kept confidential and be treated as privileged information.

2.  Acknowledgement of Sources: Manuscript reviewers must ensure that authors have acknowledged all sources of data used in the research. Any kind of similarity or overlap between the manuscripts under consideration or with any other published paper of which the reviewer has personal knowledge must be immediately brought to the editor's notice.

3.  Standards of Objectivity: The review of submitted manuscripts must be done objectively and the reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

4.  Promptness: If a reviewer feels him/her can't complete a review of the manuscript within the stipulated time then this information must be communicated to the editor so that the manuscript can be sent to another reviewer.​
