​​​​​​​​The National Defense Institute (IDN) organizes, in partnership with the School of Social Sciences of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV/CPDOC - Brazil), the Specialization Course in Sociology of the Armed Forces. 

The course aims to promote reflection on the relationship between armed forces, state and society, comprising the transformations, organization and internal and external dynamics of military institutions, and their impacts and challenges in a changing world.   

In dealing with scientific production in the areas of social sciences and military studies, the course will analyze civil-military relations from a series of central issues, which focus on the relationship between the State and the Armed Forces, the political decision-making process on military action, the impact of public opinion and the media,  gender integration, organizational culture, human resources, and social and organizational challenges facing military institutions today.

​​The training is carried out by national and international researchers specialized in the areas of knowledge related to the themes of the course.

Promote knowledge sharing related to military sociology, providing an in-depth analysis of the relations between the Armed Forces, State and Society.

Understand the theoretical, conceptual and methodological specificities in military studies and social sciences to develop skills and promote scientific research in these fields, as well as in the broader domains of Security and Defense.

Reflect the behaviour, organization and daily dynamics of the military institution and its actors, from a focus on those who serve in the Armed Forces and in the institution itself.

Understand the transformations and continuities of the organizational dynamics of the Armed Forces in a changing world and different spatiotemporal contexts.​

​​The Specialization Course in Sociology of the Armed Forces, jointly organized by the IDN and FGV/CPDOC, will be offered online through the Zoom software and taught by a group of researchers specialized in the topics listed below, with national and international experience.

Modules:

• Military, democracy and political power;

• Reflexivity in studies on the Armed Forces;

• Peace missions and conflict resolution;

• Gender and family in the military institution;

• Education and military career;

• Armed Forces, State and Society.

The training lasts a total of 30 hours. Each module will have 4 (four) hours, one day a week in after-work hours.

At the end of the course, the auditors will present individual work proposals on the themes and debates held during the training.

The course is coordinated by Celso Castro (FGV/CPDOC), Helena Carreiras and Cristina Rodrigues da Silva (IDN).

  • Graduates and university students in the areas of Political Science, History, Sociology, Anthropology, International Relations, Psychology, Communication Sciences and related areas;
  • Members of the Armed Forces and Security Forces and Services;
  • Journalists and scholars on the subject;
  • Staff of Public Administration, namely the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Administration;​

  • ​​​Hold a degree, higher degree or attendance at Higher Education, without prejudice to the fact that, by decision of the IDN Directorate, candidates whose professional profile guarantees sufficient qualification for their attendance will be admitted;
  • Performance of functions for which the course objectives are exciting.


Applications are formalized by submitting, within the defined application period, the following documents:

  • Duly completed application form (online);
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • A current, colour passport-sized photograph;
  • Copy of qualifications certificate(s).

Applications will only be considered if they include all the documents indicated and sent, attached to the application form or electronically to idn.candidaturas@defesa.pt.

To attend the course, the payment of a single tuition fee, defined annually, is due.

Applications will not be accepted if:

  • Are not properly instructed (ex. lack of documents);
  • Do not meet admission criteria.

The presentation of any required documentation after the stipulated deadline also determines the non-acceptance of the application.

Applications are considered by a Selection Committee appointed by the IDN Director.

Candidates will be informed about their admission to the course by email.​
