The Youth Defence Course (CDJ) aims to promote the awareness and training of young people who make up the universe of potential leaders or senior managers of State structures and civil society, through study, reflection and debate on major national and international problems affecting the field of security and defence.

  • Provide young Auditors with basic knowledge on the main issues related to Security and Defense, both nationally and internationally;
  • Promote the development of a security and defence culture from a strategic perspective;
  • Deepen awareness of Security and Defense issues;
  • Provide mutual contact and exchange of ideas between young auditors with diverse academic backgrounds and professional experiences.

The CDJ lasts for three weeks in person and simultaneously at IDN's facilities in Lisbon and Porto. If it is not possible to take the course in person, it will take place by videoconference.

The course comprises the following types of activities:

  • Conferences on security and defence issues, followed by debate;
  • Group work on topics related to security and defence, followed by exposure and debate;
  • Study visits to units of the Armed Forces, the Security Forces and the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, and eventually to other cultural organizations or spaces, to be designated (the visits depend on whether the course will be in person or not; it also depends on the authorization of the various entities for its realization).

The CDJ is attended on a part-time basis, except for the opening and closing days of the course and study visits - cases in which the program usually lasts throughout the day, and participation in all course activities is mandatory.

The CDJ is primarily aimed at young Portuguese citizens, and candidates from the countries of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) are also admitted.

Exceptionally, applications from young people of other nationalities may be admitted when there is a clear added value for the other participants and the promotion of a culture of security and defence.

All young people of both sexes who meet the following requirements can be admitted to the CDJ frequency:

  • Be aged between 21 and 35 years old at the start of the CDJ;
