The projects of researcher Susana Ferreira and researcher Frank Mattheis were selected by the jury of the first edition of the FLAD Atlantic Security Award

The transformation of border regimes and regional maritime security mechanisms in the Atlantic were the themes of the winning applications of the first edition of the FLAD Atlantic Security Award.

The projects of researchers Susana Ferreira and Frank Matheis were distinguished by the jury of the first edition of the FLAD Atlantic Security Award, launched last year, in a total of 11 works in competition, from European, North American and South American candidates.

“A transformação dos regimes fronteiriços no Atlântico. Da securitização a uma abordagem centrada no ser humano no Sudoeste da Europa” is the title of the project by the Portuguese researcher, which addresses the new migratory routes in the Atlantic and the impact of the management of migratory flows on the human security of the communities of this space, a subject of transversal interest to the countries of the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic and that will benefit the institutions promoting the Award, as it is a topic that traditionally does not appear on the agenda of security and defense studies in the Atlantic.

The second winning project, "Mechanisms of regional maritime security in the Atlantic: a comparative study", analyzes the cooperation mechanisms around maritime security in the Atlantic, to explain their proliferation and limited articulation. The work, reveals the jury, was distinguished not only for its relevance and originality, but also for providing innovative results, which will have a beneficial effect for the institutions promoting the Award, in their mission to promote knowledge and cooperation around the Atlantic.

Created by the Centro do Atlântico, the Instituto da Defesa Nacional and the Fundação Luso-Americana, the FLAD Atlantic Security Award distinguishes, annually, with 20 thousand euros, two research projects that contribute to the development of knowledge about Security and Defense in space. Atlantic.

The IDN will be the host institution for these projects, the results of which will later be disseminated in debates and published in the Institute's editorial lines.
